A group of scientists and engineers working out of the University of Queensland in Australia have developed a high-tech underwater drone that is designed to provide a new and innovative way to monitor and protect coral reefs, which have been suffering a decline in health in recent years.
Dubbed the RangerBot, this underwater drone comes equipped with a vision system that allows it to navigate in the ocean, and it happens to be outfitted with an array of sensors that allow it to assess reefs and detect issues such as pollution, bleaching and the presence of pests. The drone can function for eight hours per battery charge, allowing it to conduct underwater surveys for long periods of time.
