Johnsen Schmaling Architects designed the 'Redaction House' for an artist and her family in Oconomowoc, Wisonsin.
For the home's exterior, the architects opted for a simple cubic volume that frames the scenic lake views. It rests on a stepped brick podium built into the ground. The architects wanted to achieve "visual redaction" throughout the home and the site, beginning with the courtyard entryway, which follows a linear configuration. Inside, they opted for floor-to-ceiling apertures, inserted between solid walls, to embrace the scenic views and screen the less-than-desirable ones.
The architects arranged the rooms around a centered living hall, in which the aperture walls form a vertical alignment that frames views of the sky and surrounding cliffs.
