A group of scientists and engineers working at Johns Hopkins University have developed a high-tech prosthesis for women who have had to undergo lower limb amputations and want to be able to walk in high heels.
This prosthesis makes it possible for the user to wear heels up to a height of four inches. The prosthesis itself features a pair of interlocking aluminum discs that easily open and shut to make it possible to adjust one's fit via a lever located at the ankle area. The prosthesis weighs only 3 pounds but can support weights up to 250 pounds.
The reason this project is important is because simple things like being able to wear one's footwear of choice can go a long way towards boosting self-esteem and normalizing the lives of women who have had to endure amputation.
