Upgraded Plugin Housing

This Prefabricated Modular System Revitalizes an Old Chinese Village

This prefabricated modular system fits into aging villages in China. In an effort to encourage urban regeneration, the People's Architecture Office completed the Courtyard House Plugin En Masse project for client the Dashilar Project. The second phase was finished in September earlier this year.

The cost-effective approach to the prefabricated modular system placed a house within a house instead of tearing down existing structures. The initiative hopes to revitalize an integral neighborhood at the core of historic Beijing. Characterized by Hutongs (narrow alleys) and old courtyard houses with limited infrastructure, little insulation and no sewage, the area presented many challenges.

The prefab modules offer a systematic solution that began as an experiment but have since been applied broadly.
