Rotterdam-based firm BYTR Architects chose copper panels and pre-heated timber for the exterior of 'ParkArk.'
The copper cladding creates a harmony between the boat's reflection and the facade. In the center of the boat, a large skylight allows sunlight to shine onto middle of the vegetated roof. Level to the roof, which is covered with sedum and grass, a terraced deck offers panoramic views of the canal.
The house boat, which is permanently moored next to a scenic park in Utrecht, was designed for a young family. The clients wanted the home to incorporate both intimacy and modernism. BYTR Architects' Richèl Lubbers explains, "They wanted to have the full experience of living and floating on the water, though without the application of a hackneyed nautical form language, such as portholes."
