Abstractedly Imperfect Homes

The Open Air Sculpture House Has Room to Breathe

Marek Rytych Architekt designed the Open Air Sculpture house in a suburban neighborhood of Warsaw, Poland.

The architects ensured that the interior and exterior of the house blend so smoothly and thoroughly, one might walk by without noticing that they've encroached onto someone's property. This is accomplished by surrounding the house with what appears to be a concrete blanket, which also works to enhance the industrial aesthetic.

Inside, the architects used raw materials, such as sheet metal (which appears in the dining room and bathroom), wood and exposed brick. The staircase is left unfinished, contrasting its concrete underbelly with the polished wooden floor. It was important to the architects that the home, while spacious, revealed its incompleteness and roughness in a way that made it abstract and interesting. The open plan allowed the architects to play with these imperfections, as well as create different perspectives throughout.
