Ocado Retail Debuts a Reusable Packaging Pilot with the Refill Coalition

Ocado Retail and Refill Coalition have launched a new reusable packaging scheme to transform the sustainability of online grocery shopping.

The pilot program is structured in two phases, each designed to test and refine innovative reusable packaging. The first phase will begin in August and will introduce Ocado Reuse Basmati Rice (2kg) and Ocado Reuse Penne Pasta (1kg) in specially designed, reusable containers. Phase two, planned for later this year, will expand the trial to include Ocado Reuse Non-Bio Liquid Detergent (3L) and Ocado Reuse Skies Fabric Conditioner (3L).

The reusable containers are pre-filled with the respective products, allowing customers to return the empty containers with their next delivery. Ocado will then collect these containers, which undergo a rigorous cleaning and sanitizing process before being refilled for future use. Each container is engineered to replace up to five single-use plastic items and is designed for a lifespan of over 60 uses.
