Net-Zero Fast Food Restaurants

McDonald's Opened Its First Net-Zero Emissions Restaurant

The very first McDonald's net-zero emissions restaurant recently opened in the town of Market Drayton in Shropshire, England and it incorporates recycling, renewable energy, and other measures to support a more sustainable future. This fast food restaurant sets a new precedent with everything from a drive-thru lane made from old car tires to cladding composed of recycled computer equipment, and chairs made from recycled plastic bottles.

Powered by renewable energy from wind turbines and solar panels, this McDonald's location also includes art made from recycled coffee beans and styrofoam cups, as well as a nature trail and garden that helps people to connect with the natural world. Already, McDonald's is applying some of the innovations from this net-zero restaurant to others, and Beth Hart, a McDonald’s spokesperson, says, "it will act as a blueprint for our future new builds."
