Japan's NEC Corporation recently launched a new update to its facial recognition technology with an engine that delivers precise results. The most notable change with this update is the ability to accurately scan a face even when a face mask is being worn with its rate of over 99.9% in a 1:1 testing.
It has gone through tests of subjects wearing patterned masks or differently colored masks as well. The main focus of the recognition system surrounds the individual's eyes, which is exposed and not covered to pick up specific characteristics. It enables high precision certification of both mask wearers and when they are not wearing masks. NEC states, "face recognition operates by extracting feature points, such as the position, shape, and size of a subject's eyes, nose and mouth, and matching and identifying detected face."
