The "Leather" Products from MycoWorks are Made from Mushroom Plant Waste

Leather is an attractive and versatile material for clothing and accessories, but the start-up 'MycoWorks' couldn't reconcile the fact that it also uses an intense amount of natural resources and ultimately harms the environment. But rather than simply abandoning leather altogether, the company used mushrooms to find a solution.

MycoWorks creates their false leather products by breaking down cellulose and rearranging the sugars and proteins of mycelium, which comes from the stems of mushrooms. Miraculously, the mushroom-based material from MycoWorks is virtually indistinguishable from cattle-based leather.

Perhaps best of all, a cowhide-sized sheaf of mushroom leather is carbon-neutral during production (i.e. the net input and output of carbon dioxide is zero,) while the same amount of cattle leather would produce 33 pounds of carbon dioxide.

This new sustainable mushroom leather could completely revolutionize the leather goods industry.
