Hermès' Victoria bag style is being introduced in a mushroom leather bag style and the product will mark the first time that Hermès has used vegan leather in its luxury products. The popular bag style will be made with lab-grown mushroom leather called Sylvania, which boasts an elegant amber hue and a texture that mimics the properties of conventional animal-based leather.
The plant-based leather was created in partnership with California-based start-up MycoWorks via a patented process that turns a network of mushroom threads into a usable leather alternative. Although the luxury label's bag won't be entirely vegan, as it will include some calfskin elements, it helps to introduce a shift towards the use of more sustainable, cruelty-free materials.
