It is easy to see why the beautifully sculpted Monarch chair by Eduardo García Campos is among the recently revealed winners for the 2012-2013 A’Design Award and Competition.
The award-winning design makes reference to the wings of the Monarch butterfly and organic forms seen in Art Nouveau. The design plays on qualities of the butterfly, capturing elements like the delicate balance between fragility and strength. The form is crafted from a single piece of cast aluminum, a challenge that took the concept nearly three years of work with 3D modelling software, a sculptor and a metal engineer to achieve.
The Monarch has a significantly longer lifespan compared to other species of butterflies. Inspired by this idea of longevity, Campos’ attests that this piece of furniture is an investment for a premium market, not to mention that the full concept of the butterfly’s wingspan is best illustrated with a pair of the chairs side-by-side.
