Beginning in 2017, all mobile phones sold in India will be required to have a mobile panic button. The new mobile panic button is being implemented in an attempt to reduce the amount of crimes against women in India. When the panic button is pressed on the user's cellphone, an alert is sent to police, as well as contacts chosen by the user.
As Department of Telecommunications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted, "Ensuring women's security through technology is digital empowerment and an important component of #DigitalIndia."The mobile panic button can be easily activated on regular phones by pressing the "5" or "9" keys and on smartphones by pressing the power button three times.
To continue with the goal of providing more support and protection for women, by 2018, all new mobile devices will come with built-in GPS systems to make locating someone in trouble quicker.
