A team of researchers at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain are using mobile 3D printers -- dubbed 'Minibuilders' -- to print large-scale structures directly on site. The robots are called 'Minibuilders' because of their size, with the largest robot being only 42 centimeters wide.
The robots work in teams of three, each of which carries out a unique function in the building process. The robots work on their own task but coordinate with each other throughout the process. Each Minibuilder follows instructions provided by a central computer fitted with sensors and positioning technology. Another robot provides the building material to eah Minibuilder as required.
The Minibuilders have so far only created one demonstration piece that sits in the Design Museum of Barcelona. However, it is hoped that the robots will eventually be able to work in swarms to construct full-sized structures.
