Miniature Urban Scenes

Ryan Monogan Makes Mini Sculptures Inspired by Urban Locations

What most people hurriedly rush past in real life inspired artist Ryan Monogan to create his mini sculptures.

The sculptures all take after small urban scenes -- whether those are storefronts, parking lots or sculptures. A particularly interesting mini sculpture is one in which a liquor store is on display, complete with windows, cigarette and alcohol advertising and dirty brick walls. Another display is a recreation of low-income urban dwellings -- with dilapidated windows that have old air conditioning units hanging out of them. These mini sculptures may invoke "awws" at first, but their subject matter is anything but endearing.

The artwork shows a pocket-sized version of urban scenes that duplicate real environments that people live in -- making the viewer think about income inequality and the impact of unequal distribution of amenities in the process of urban planning.
