London-based photographer Martin Stavars recently released a series of photographs of China's largest city, titled 'Megalopolis: Shanghai.' The photographs clearly convey the burgeoning character of the city. Steep spires of shimmering glass and steel jut out from the landscape to produce a forest of skyscrapers that spreads out from the foreground deep into the background, scratching at the horizon.
Streets twirl about one another, intersecting in a maze of concrete and asphalt. People and vehicles clutter the streets with busy, almost overlapping movement. There is an organic quality in these photographs despite their monochromatic color scheme. One gets the feeling that the growth that Shanghai has experienced and is experiencing is natural and inevitable.
