There have been countless campaigns that have attempted to bring awareness to the dangers of being distracted by one's smartphone when crossing busy intersections, but these lights for pedestrians aim to introduce a new solution for safety.
Since phone users are constantly staring down at their mobile screens, a Dutch town called Bodegraven has taken it upon themselves to update crossing solutions for pedestrians by installing colored LED lights at pavement level. These lights change colors to reflect the direction of moving traffic at the intersection, making it possible for phone users to safely cross even if their eyes are cast downwards.
For the pilot project, the LED light strips were developed by HIG Traffic Systems, as part of a move to anticipate distractions caused by apps, games and social media.
