The Shimmer device is the winning design of the iF Design Award and it is created by Hefei LCFC Information Technology. It is a contactless payment device that is worn around the neck and meant to aid visually impaired people to accept and make payments seamlessly. It comes with features such as a braille keyboard and camera that is made to be easily accessible.
The Shimmer also has a screen that showcases a QR code that navigates accepting payments. Additionally, it also has a fingerprint scanner that adds an authentication factor for secure payment processes. The designers note that “Mobile payment is very popular in Asia, but the current most common method of using a smartphone is not friendly to the blind as it requires screen reading software, which is cumbersome to operate and potentially exposes private data."
