Berlin studio Thomas Kröger Architekt revamped the Pasta Maria, an Italian bistro located in Potsdamer Platz, by installing copper-clad boxes, extraction fans and lighting suspended above the patron's heads.
Kröger explains, "The idea was to make the open kitchen the most important place within the restaurant, like a grand fireplace in an old castle. We tried to have as many reflections in the copper as possible to play with form and light."
The rest of the restaurant is constructed from travertine stone, offering a contrast to the warmer metal additions. To further the distinction, the ceiling was painted black, making the copper stand out. The technical shaft and pipe work was also painted black, escaping the need for a suspended ceiling.
