Celebrated Danish architect Dorte Mandrup is designing a stunning new cultural centre in the Canadian city of Iqaluit that is designed to function as a space that aims to celebrate and boost awareness of Inuit culture and create strong linkages of learning, understanding and cultural exchange between Inuit people and people of other backgrounds.
The Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre building is set to be located in the capital city of Canada's Nunavut province. The building's design is partly inspired by the visually stunning and unique shapes that are created by snowdrifts, although it also stands out due to the fact that a section of the building is below ground. This design also has practical utility in the fact that the building will be able to welcome snowdrift over its roof without necessarily causing uncomfortable build-up of snow that can hamper access and lead to logistical problems.
"What the building takes away from the land, it gives back with a generous roof that merges with landscape and offers a new natural outdoor gathering place with unhindered views over the vast tundra," Dorte Mandrup stated.
