Japanese studio Movedesign transformed a residence into a homestyle bakery located in downtown Fukuoka.
The bakery exists within a shell of the timber-walled residence, which also features parquet flooring, exposed beams and a pitched tiled roof. The architects were interested in maintaining the domesticity of the space, which is why they refrained from stripping the facade and erecting a storefront in its place. To maintain the appearance of a domicile, the architects instead opted for a long, narrow window.
The Boulanger Kaiti, as the bakery is named, features an elliptical counter in the center of the space, upon which bread and other baked goods are displayed. The edges of the table and surrounding countertops are painted black, offering a warm contrast against the wood.
