The British government has launched a new weight-loss program with 'HeadUp,' a health technology company. HeadUp was selected out of numerous contenders, each wanting to host the program with the government. This program will work by providing participants with health wearables that monitor activity and health metrics. Then, these metrics will be analyzed over time, and participants who lead a healthy lifestyle will be rewarded.
The British government launched this initiative in order to address the growing rate of obesity in the country. Therefore, participants have been provided with an economic incentive to lose weight, which comes in the form of discounted entertainment tickets, clothing vouchers, and other valuable rewards. This program began in January of 2022, and will run until mid-2022, at which point the rewards will be delivered.
This economic incentive model was selected due to credible research stating that financial incentives are an effective way to ensure that individuals maintain healthier lifestyles, instead of giving up early. Then, after six months of maintaining these lifestyles, it is expected that the practices will become naturally ingrained into the lives of the participants.
