Bernardo Bader Architects, an Austrian studio, has recently built a house called Haus am Sturcherwald in the mountainous countryside of Vorarlberg region, Austria. At over 1,000 meters above sea level, Haus am Sturcherwald is designed to subtly reference this great height. It's perched upon thin stilts, and its classic, barn-like gable is disproportionately taller than in a more traditional building.
Though Haus am Sturcherwald is on the side of a steep hill, it isn't as precarious as it looks. The stilts that extend to the ground are more aesthetic than structural — the house is in fact firmly planted to the ground by a thick concrete column that contains the basement area of the rural Austrian home.
