This spiral vase was made on a Makerbot 3D printer and it is a perfect geek chic gift idea.
This vase is the result of some intense computation and discovery. The designer began with the Koch snowflake fractal, traced it into a vector, and spun it in a vertical spiral to create the overall form. It is interesting that such a technical -- and to some, geeky -- procedure can create something so beautiful.
To make it a little more dynamic, the designer took this spiral vase form and processed it further with a non-linear lattice deformer. This made the spiral softer angled in the middle and more dramatic at the ends. The non-linear flow creates a sense of nature and organic physicality.
