The Garden of Bomarzo was the brainchild of ruthless mercenary leader, Pier Francesco Orsini of the mid-16th century. Although he was mercenary, Pier Francesco Orsini was a major patron of the arts. After his cherished wife had passed away, Pier Francesco Orsini did what any typical, battle-scarred mercenary would do: He created a garden.
Channeling all his energies and sorrows into this personal project, which spanned about 30 years, he commissioned Pirro Ligorio to create these stone monstrosities to fill his garden. Well, these are far superior to your average garden gnome.
