A local design firm has recently drawn up plans for a new Dutch bridge that will not only provide a crossing for cyclists and pedestrians, but also a roosting spot for local bats. The Vlotwateringbrug bridge is set to be designed by the 'Next Architects' firm and it will provide an important natural pathway for bats in the province of South Holland.
The bridge will be 70 meters in total length and it will span the banks of the Vlotwatering river in the Dutch town of Monster. The bridge is set to feature a curved design with wooden slats on the one side and bricks on the other. The Vlotwatering river is an important crossing for the local bats, therefore the architects created an eco-friendly structure that would not impede the bats route. To ensure that the bridge could offer a safe roosting spot as well as a place for winter hibernation, the bridge designers added an extra mass to control the temperature of the structure.
