DuraSense by Stora Enso was recently introduced as a wood-based biocomposite that has the potential to replace fossil-based plastics with a solution made with natural fibers from renewable resources.
The granules that make up DuraSense include a mix of natural wood fibers, polymers and additives, which are said to offer the same mouldability of plastic, yet also the sustainability of wood. DuraSense by Stora Enso is said to be suited to a range of applications, including everything from furniture and beauty products to automotive parts. Beyond this, DuraSense may also be further fused with recycled or bio-based polymers.
According to Patrica Oddshammar, Head of Biocomposites at Stora Enso, "DuraSense can reduce the consumption of plastic materials by up to 60%, ensuring fewer microplastics end up in the environment."
