Dubai residents should be proud in knowing that their Earth Hour 2009 participation helped save at least 200,000 kilowatts of electricity, according to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. That is the equivalent to 120,000 kilos of carbon dioxide (CO2). All they had to do was switch off their lights and appliances for the duration of the Earth Hour 2009.
The numbers are a huge increase over last year, where about 100,000 kw of energy were saved. Dubai ranked 13th among the global cities in terms of participation in the event last year. We're not sure what the new ranking is yet, but it is very encouraging to see the increase in participation and hope all major cities experienced jumps in participation and savings.
"We’re glad that more people joined the Earth Hour this year. Fifty-seven schools, numerous hotels and government institutions joined us. We think that we’ll achieve at least double this year's energy savings compared to last year’s Earth Hour," said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager for Demand and Tariff Management at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.
