The Discovering Columbus art installation is quite out of place. It is essentially a pop-up living room that has been erected around the 120-year-old statue of Christopher Columbus at Columbus Circle in New York City. Although this isn't the first of its kind--the artist created number other installations based around the same concept including the Merlion Hotel--it is the only one to soar 70 feet high. By doing so, Discovering Columbus offers unparalleled views of Central Park.
Created by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi, the Discovering Columbus installation was commissioned by Public Art Fund and supported by the city. Taking two years to create, visitors are able to receive free tickets to view the space. All they need to do is climb six storeys of scaffolding to enter the 810-square-foot living room.
