As an alternative to using a simple basket to collect church donations, the Saint-François de Molitor church in Paris, France, is now passing around high-tech contactless payment terminals.
As the church—which was modernized in 2005—boasts seating to accommodate about 500 people, the new contactless terminals have the potential to significantly speed up the collection process. At one of the recent morning Sunday services in the church, five of the terminals were distributed throughout, alongside traditional baskets for those who had cash on hand.
Although the terminals offer a simpler way to accept payment, they mimic the original look of the baskets. The circular "digital basket" boasts a hard plastic cover, which conceals a Vivopay machine that is connected to a Samsung mobile phone.
