The Royal Canadian Mint worked with the University of Ottawa's Centre for Research in Photonics to create a unique Canadian coin that appears to pulsate. The Pulsating Maple Leaf 2020 $10 Fine Silver Coin features sub-millimeter-scale mirrors in the shape of a maple leaf, which seemingly expand and contract as the collectible coin is tilted.
The first-of-its-kind coin design fuses cutting-edge photonics with an iconic Canadian symbol with the use of surface mirror technology. Just 3,000 of the coins are available worldwide, each of which is crafted with two ounces of 99.99% pure silver.
As part of a series of silver coins, a variety of shapes from Canada's classic circulation coin designs will be reimagined in a similar way.
