Japan-based Apollo Architects & Associates designed an incredibly modern concrete house called the ‘Calm House’ to accommodate exchange students from abroad. The house, situated in Tokyo, features two main bedrooms, a spacious living room and two guest bedrooms that lead to an open private deck at the top front of the house. The deck is hidden behind stainless steel panels that prevail the house’s exterior and cannot be seen from pedestrians and people passing by on the street. Principal designer Satoshi Kurosaki says, "one of the key design concepts is to respect the privacy of the family and guests to achieve comfortable and relaxing lifestyles."
The three-storey house can be found in Bunkyo, a small town north of downtown Tokyo. The rooms encapsulate a courtyard that can be found in the south-east corner of the house. The interior of the house is incredibly modern with white walls, concrete walls, steel structures and dark wooden flooring. Although the interior is extremely stylish and minimalist, the architects at Apollo have managed to inject tradition by putting in Japanese style sliding doors.
