Shaded Sports Complexes

Quintanilla Arquitectos Build the Cañales Sports Complex

The Cañales sports complex and skate park is a brand new facility in the town of Cárdenas, a Cuban municipality in the southern state of Tabasco. The building was designed and completed by the Mexican studio Quintanilla Arquitectos.

The aim of this project was to increase the availability of facilities dedicated to sport in the neighborhood, which was "born in the '90s, with a deficit of cultural and sports places," according to Quintanilla Arquitectos. The Cañales sports complex and skate park makes various facilities available to citizens, including a covered basketball court, a soccer field, a skatepark, a playground, and an outdoor gym.

With subtle cues to modern brutalism through the concrete posts and steel trusses, the Cañales sports complex also features substantial shaded areas "for enjoyment and coexistence."
