Following 3D tumor-testing technology out of Philadelphia's Drexel University, scientists from Scotland's Heriot-Watt University are 3D printing brain tumor cells to better research cancer. Brain Tumour Charity gave 3D printing expert Dr. Will Shu and the school's Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Engineering a £67,000 grant to gain increased insight into "the biology of malignant growths." According to the American Brain Tumor Association, in the United States, almost 700,000 are affected by brain and central nervous system tumors.
The 3D printed brain tumor cells are supposed to better mimic cancerous growth. This gives researchers the chance to text drugs in new ways and develop new treatments, which should hopefully speed up the time it takes to make new cancer-fighting drugs available.
