Thinking outside of the box is an ability that is often praised, but as Harry Thaler presents his Atelierhouse, one cannot help but be impressed at the imagination behind a collection of truly boxy furnishing units. Commissioned by Museion in Bolzano, Italy, this project proposes an artist's studio that's equipped with functional and fetching timber crates.
A double mattress has been worked into a sort of lumber shed that's accessed by opening one or two hinged doors. The spare single bed pulls out of an upright chest and the desk has two walls and a ceiling. The shelves are, of course, minimalist wooden cases, and Atelierhouse is perfectly packaged as a simple furniture system with great depth and a whimsical surprise inside.
