Musical Genre-Recognizing Robots

This AI Music Research Reworks Classical Songs in New Styles

This AI music research allows Beethoven to be played like The Beatles. This invention in artificial intelligence comes from the Sony Computer Science Library (CSL) in Paris, France. The team was able to use machine learning techniques to reorchestrate songs, including the European Union theme song and Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' in a more modern style.

Researchers used the max entropy approach to machine learning in order to teach a computer how to recognize the core elements different genres of music. This allowed them to take the classical piece by Beethoven and rework it in different ways, using artificial intelligence.

In addition to AI music research, Sony CSL Paris also performs research in language and sustainability.
