Upcycled African Fashion

afriCAN is Made by Artisans in South Africa for North America's Market

Likely the first social business we've featured based out of Northern Canada, AfriCAN has its head office in Whitehorse in the Yukon. Their mission is to create environmentally- and socially-conscious clothing suitable for the western market, but created using materials made in South Africa and made by artisans in the region. In addition to being ethically made, the clothing also has an environmental component, as certain details on the apparel, such as ribbing, are made from upcycled garments.

On top of creating employment opportunities in Malawi and Zambia, AfriCAN also reinvests 100% of its profits into those countries.

"Through the fashion industry, we are seeking to rebrand Africa in Canada, connect people to people, and transform our relationship with Africa from one of charity to one of social, economic and political partnership," their mission states on their website.

Their online shop is launching soon, as is their section on Ethical Ocean.
