Courtyard-Inspired Hosptials

This Afghan Hospital Takes Inspiration from the Surrounding Landscape

This Afghan hospital, nestled in the country's central highlands, is an incredible new space of healing built around the idea of public and private courtyards. Known as the Bamyan Provincial Hospital, this new place of health was designed by Arcop and occupies over two-and-a-half hectares of land by the Bamyan River. Arcop's original proposal for the Afghan hospital was informed by the architectural heritage of its setting and the final design captures this idea and reinterprets the construction methods traditionally used in the region.

The layout of the hospital is based primarily around a series of courtyards that progress from public spaces to private spaces used by patients undergoing treatment or recovering from treatment. The hospital also plays host to a gorgeous array of foliage that references the surrounding nature and mountainous landscape.
