New York-based photographer Dana Litovsky's 'Bachelorette' series vividly captures typical American-style bachelorette parties, and the shrieking and scandal that mark them.
The photographs were taken at over 40 different bachelorette parties hosted in New York City, Atlantic City and New Jersey. Litovsky found her subjects through social networks and bachelorette party websites, offering free photo shoots to brides in exchange for an invite to the party.
At first glance, the series simply documents the scandalous antics of bachelorette parties, but is more than that -- it's an exploration of the societal expectation to bid farewell to single womanhood, a behavior considered more stereotypically male. The photographs reveal a culture where the contradicting values of purity and debauchery co-exist.
Litovsky's 'Bachelorette' effectively documents the surreal, memorable and contradictory elements of this rite of passage, where sisterhood, celebration, commiseration and consumer culture are all on show.
