An Indian cancer patient has received a groundbreaking treatment that has seen him have his upper jaw replaced by a partly 3D-printed jaw prosthetic. The 41-year-old resident of Bengaluru was diagnosed with cancer of the palate, with surgeons forced to remove his upper jaw, leaving parts of his nose and mouth exposed.
The prosthetic was developed by Osteo3D, a Bengaluru-based company backed by the df3d design group. Osteo3D specializes in 3D printing solutions with healthcare applications.
Osteo3D used a CT scan to create a 3D reconstruction of the patient's face, before printing a replica of his mouth. The model was able to fully simulate joint movements and open properly, getting rid of the difficulties of creating a mold from the patient's real jaw.
