Re-Sounding Yarns is a project by Paula Vogels, a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, that consists of eight woven speakers. The thought-provoking installation was on display during Dutch Design Week 2022. Paula Vogels wished to explore "the sounds and labor conditions of the textile industry," mixing creative curiosity with institutional critique.
The woven speakers are suspended in space and emit "a soundscape gathered from different weaving environments." Vogels has built the woven speakers from copper wire and nylon fishing lines. The construction of Re-Sounding Yarns is interesting as when a sound signal is emitted to the copper wire, the material transmits it to magnets, located on either end of the speaker tubes. This "creates an electromagnetic field that vibrates and thereby generates a sound."
