Sasaki Updates the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade
Amy Duong — June 20, 2024 — Art & Design
International architecture studio Sasaki completes a renovation transformation of a waterfront and public park -- the Wilmington Waterfront Promenade is entirely altered in Los Angeles as it was formerly an industrial port and now it is doused with green spaces and various playgrounds. It opened with 10 acres along the port and is one of the busiest seaports in the world.
Philip Dugdale, associate principle explains, "A key driver was to try to craft a landscape that created a natural buffer between Wilmington and the port while also taking advantage of the sweeping views of the Los Angeles harbor. Our team created a strong sculptural landform which elevates the existing grade and creates the perfect viewing opportunity out to the water. The landscape wraps the edge of the park and feels like this protective frame that also helps to create a series of smaller rooms with shade-dappled seating areas and playful moments that the community can enjoy."
