Harry Yeff created a system dubbed Voice Gems. The artist and vocalist has always had a fascination with the human voice. So much so that he set out to capture the essence of someone's voice and translate it into a physical object.
Voice Gems takes voice data and transforms it into colors and forms, similar to the shapes of gemstones. Yeff collaborated with artist Kenny Schachter to create large-scale versions of the gem sculptures revealed at Art Basel Miami Beach this month. The project has lasted for over a decade. Yeff collaborated with many scientists to break down the human voice into various components before transforming voices into stone shapes. The bespoke system records a person's voice to create a unique voice fingerprint to inform the Voice Gems' design.
