This cancer support center features tree house architecture to provide patients and their families with a natural retreat. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Maggie's Center is located in Oxford, UK on the grounds of Churchill Hospital.
Raised on timber stilts so it can be nestled among the trees, the facility has the appearance of an enlarged club house. The center has three wings, each with a different function, that jut out from the main structure, which houses a kitchen and dining area. The goal of these wings was not to disturb the surrounding trees and plants.
Comfortable tree house architecture could become more prevalent in healthcare environments and healing institutions as research demonstrates green space and natural light have measurable health benefits.
