The future of hybrid racing just got a massive shot in the arm with the unveiling of the Toyota TS030 Hybrid. Toyota's newest hybrid is a prototype endurance racer designed specifically for the ultimate endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Toyota TS030 Hybrid has a 3.4-liter V8 engine coupled to one of two electric motor configurations: a front-mounted system from Aisin AW or a rear one from Denso. According to official rules, a hybrid racer can only use electric power to propel one set of wheels. What's most interesting about this racer is that it actually pulls out of the pits and begins racing in electric mode. Toyota has recently been all over the hybrid racing scene designing a tuned Prius for competition.
