Open Architecture is pushing the boundaries of theatre design with these beautiful, amorphous plans. Recently, the practice released its vision for the Yichang Grand Theatre, to be located at the Pinghu Peninsula in Hubei Province, China. The floor plan is to span 70,000 square meters.
For the theatre design, Open Architecture drew inspiration from the fluidity and ever-changing nature of water—an element that "defines the city of Yichang." Curvascious forms, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, and even a window that is shaped like a teardrop embrace this inspiration.
The Yichang Grand Theatre will welcome guests into a 1,600-seat grand theater, a 1,200-seat concert hall, and a 400-seat black box. The property will also have two outdoor theatres and an outdoor garden.
