Tallinn Zoo is testing out the NaviLens app to enhance accessibility for visually impaired visitors. The app, which utilizes special codes that can be scanned by mobile cameras, provides spoken directions and information about zoo attractions. This move is expected to make it easier for those with visual impairments to navigate the zoo independently. This initiative, led by the Tallinn Strategic Management Office’s Tourism Department, is part of a broader effort to modernize the city’s signage and accessibility infrastructure.
The NaviLens app is designed to be flexible, supporting not only visually impaired individuals but also offering features like sign language and simplified content for children or those with intellectual disabilities. The app has been successfully implemented in other cities, including Barcelona and New York, where it has received positive feedback from users.
Tallinn Zoo has integrated the app into its environment by installing 15 NaviLens codes from the entrance to the Rainforest exhibit. This is in addition to existing accessibility features like Braille information boards and tactile pathways. The zoo is keen on gathering feedback from users to assess the app’s effectiveness and consider further integration into the city’s accessibility initiatives.
