Architect Dr. Anupama Kundoo framed her research and practice around promoting sustainability in India and creating more environmentally-friendly and affordable housing options for their large population.
The result of these efforts are 'high-speed houses' that offer solutions to "housing and sanitation issues worldwide." The houses are made up of ferro-cement which is a plaster applied over metal mesh. The doctor believes that it is more resilient and easier to prefabricate and tint to the user's discretion. Some of her homes are fixed to the ground while others can be dismantled and are portable. The architect designs each home so that it is customized to the needs of the individual based on the community and location they live in.
Her project to promote sustainability in India is also working to encourage the local communities to create the material ferro-cement, which will help build local economies.
