In the Palestinian city of Ramallah, it is not uncommon to come across posters celebration suicide bombers, resistance fighters and other militiamen who were killed or martyred for their cause. Dutch photojournalist Ad van Denderen captured photos of these posters, which serve both to glorify the fallen as well as encourage others to follow suit.
The portraits were captured in the days preceding the bombings before being mounted after the subject's death. The poses of the men in the photos are designed to express strength, faith and courage. However, it is not difficult to notice that their true feeling before their final actions is one of fear and realization of the end.
These portraits are printed on paper that is ultimately torn by time and the elements. However, the dark inspiration they have the potential to offer -- with devastating consequences -- will likely outlive the posters themselves.
