This Soil Heating System Can Curb Pests Without Harmful Pesticides
Rahul Kalvapalle — December 29, 2023 — Tech
A team of innovative scientists led by none other than Sunshin Jung of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute have developed a high-tech soil heating system that is designed to be able to kill pests by using microwaves, with the hope that this could one day be used in order to help tackle the scourge of pests without using pesticides that can be harmful to the environment and crops.
This soil heating system is currently capable of heating up soil as deep as 30 cm below the ground. The wavelength of microwaves can be altered, increased or decreased as required in order to eliminate fungi, bacteria and other pests.
"This technology helps to kill pests residing underground after harvest without the use of pesticides, their side effects and environmental pollution, and will contribute a lot to agricultural productivity and farmers’ income," said Jung.
The technology is set to be commercialized by Jooeun Care Farm.
